DatatAItaja – AI Literacy and Data Skills for Schools

The DatatAItaja project enhances AI literacy among 11–16-year-olds and their teachers, while also strengthening their understanding of algorithms, data protection, and cybersecurity. The project’s activities are focused on schools located in Microsoft’s data center regions: Espoo, Kirkkonummi, and Vihti.

It is important for young people to recognize how AI and algorithms work, as well as to identify AI-generated content—including manipulated images and texts. Especially on social media platforms popular among youth, it is essential to be able to verify and critically assess the sources of published content. As generative AI platforms become more widespread, users should be aware that the data entered into these platforms is often not protected.

By increasing understanding of personal data protection and users’ privacy rights, the project ensures that young people are equipped to safeguard their own information and better understand how social media applications function. Data protection is a particularly important theme for youth, as they frequently explore and adopt new online services and social media apps—often sharing personal data during registration. Understanding data is also a prerequisite for understanding AI, since AI is trained using massive datasets.

Young people are engaged through school-based workshops, a lightweight online learning module, and Instagram content. The workshops will be held in the fall 2025 in schools across Espoo, Kirkkonummi, and Vihti. In addition to students, teachers will also be trained so they can independently organize workshops on the project’s themes in the future. The workshops are based on educational modules developed in the Generation AI project, which introduce AI through hands-on activities.

A nationwide online learning module will be launched, consisting of short videos and quizzes that test knowledge in AI literacy, data protection, cybersecurity, and algorithmic understanding.

The DatatAItaja project emphasizes equality and diversity in collaboration with local actors, other stakeholders, and young people.
