In total, various ICT solutions are responsible for between 4 and 10 per cent of the global annual electricity consumption, and three to five per cent of global greenhouse emissions. With the right actions, however, the carbon footprint of a single ICT service can be reduced by up to 90 per cent. The Finnish Information Society Development Centre (TIEKE), the Finnish Information Processing Association (TIVIA) and LUT University have launched a two-year Green ICT project funded by the Helsinki-Uusimaa Regional Council, in which we accelerate carbon neutral digital services and procurement of businesses and the public sector in the Helsinki-Uusimaa region of Finland.
