The high rate of digitalisation makes it important to keep learning new skills, and to recognise such skills. Skill recognition and development calls for strategic thinking, data on skills, practical tools and collaboration. Good examples of skills recognition models and tools include badges, data spaces and a digital compass.

DigiTeachers working online project has been a significant initiative aimed at enhancing digital competencies among educators. One of the important outcomes of this project has been the piloting phase, which served as a practical test to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed digital training modules.

In DigiTeachers Working Online pilot training European teachers were provided with digital skills and tools to be used in teaching. Training consisted of three modules, and each module´s skills were evaluated. When a module was passed, an Open Badge was issued.

With the rapid pace of technological development, continuous learning and updating of skills are essential. The nationwide digital skills badge constellation maintained by TIEKE Finnish Information Society Development Centre is a practical means of identifying and articulating digital skills. The constellation helps individuals to plan their careers, and companies to identify their staff’s skills.

In The Open Badges for Circular Economy project, we develop and pilot a digital open badge constellation to identify and make visible circular economy expertise needed in working life.

The Digi Teachers project is a collaborative effort between several European organizations, dedicated to training teachers of students with special needs. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting shift to online education highlighted the urgent need for special education staff to enhance their digital skills. With DigCompEdu as a point of reference, the project responds to the challenge by developing a syllabus, a training course and a toolkit for teachers.

The Digi Teachers project helps VET teaching staff improve their digital skills and competences with a strong link to pedagogy. Teachers enhance their capacity to implement online education, support their students’ digital skills and network with European colleagues engaged in special education.

Recognition of prior learning in Finland is being developed as part of a parliamentary reform of continuous learning. Finns have solid experience in competence-based education thanks to reforms already carried out, but the work is by no means complete.
